Sankofa Bridge's 2025 Educational Journey to Ghana, Africa

For many people, traveling is a vacation. For the youth of Sankofa Bridge, our 2025 Educational Excursion to Ghana, West Africa was something far greater. It was an opportunity to reconnect with history, embrace culture, discover identity, and build lifelong memories that will shape how they see themselves and the world.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and Bridge Builders, several deserving students were awarded Sankofa Bridge International Travel Scholarships, making this life-changing experience possible. For all of our scholars, this was their first time leaving the United States, their first passport stamp, and their first opportunity to step onto the African continent.
Before the journey began, parents entrusted us with one of their greatest treasures—their children. We are deeply grateful for every family who believed in our mission and allowed us to guide their sons and daughters through an experience unlike any classroom could provide.
Returning to the Source
The word Sankofa teaches us that we must go back to understand our past in order to move forward with wisdom. Our journey through Ghana brought this philosophy to life. Throughout the trip, students experienced Ghana's rich traditions, hospitality, music, cuisine, art, and vibrant culture. They met local people, learned from historians and tour guides, explored important landmarks, and gained a deeper appreciation for one of Africa's most welcoming nations.
Standing Where History Changed the World
One of the most emotional moments of our journey was visiting Cape Coast Castle.
Inside the castle, students walked through the dark slave dungeons where countless African men and women were imprisoned under unimaginable conditions before being forced onto ships during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
History became painfully real.
The walls spoke without words.
The silence inside the dungeons said more than any textbook ever could.
Students then stood before the Door of No Return—the final doorway through which millions of enslaved Africans passed before leaving their homeland forever.
For many, this was a deeply emotional and spiritual experience.
Connecting Through Education
One of the most meaningful experiences of the trip was our visit to Manna Mission Academy, where our youth participated in a cultural exchange with local students. Despite living on opposite sides of the world, the students quickly discovered how much they had in common through conversation, laughter, games, and shared learning experiences. They exchanged stories about their schools, families, and daily lives, fostering genuine friendships and a deeper appreciation for different cultures. The visit reminded everyone that while our backgrounds may differ, kindness, curiosity, and the desire to connect transcend borders. It was a powerful example of how education can build bridges of understanding across continents.
Honoring Greatness
Our group also visited the home and final resting place of W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the most influential scholars, historians, civil rights leaders, and Pan-Africanists in history.
Students learned about his extraordinary contributions to education, equality, and the global African diaspora while standing where he spent his final years after making Ghana his home. His legacy reminded our youth that education has always been one of the most powerful tools for creating change.
A Day of Service
As part of our commitment to giving back, our youth volunteered their time at a local orphanage, where they rolled up their sleeves to help paint a wall and contribute to the beautification of the children's home. Beyond the paintbrushes, however, the most meaningful work happened through human connection. Our students spent time laughing, playing, talking, and getting to know the children, filling the day with countless hugs, genuine smiles, and unforgettable moments of joy. While we arrived hoping to make a positive impact, we quickly realized that the experience changed us just as much. The visit served as a powerful reminder that service is not only about what we give, but also about the relationships we build, the compassion we share, and the lasting memories created through simple acts of kindness.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Reading about history is valuable. Standing where history happened is unforgettable.
This excursion was intentionally designed to be educational, cultural, and transformational.
Every destination became a classroom.
Every conversation became a lesson.
Every experience encouraged our students to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and think more deeply about history, identity, leadership, and their place in the world.
Experiential learning allows young people to connect with knowledge in ways that traditional education simply cannot replicate. Reading about history is valuable. Standing where history happened is unforgettable.
