This August, Sankofa Bridge proudly embarked on a life-changing cultural excursion to Ghana, Africa, with three youth scholars from New York City! Each of these incredible young leaders received a Sankofa Bridge Travel Scholarship, which covered their passport, visa, flight, accommodations, and meals — 100% FREE.

At the airport, excitement filled the air as our scholars and their parents prepared to begin a journey they would never forget — one filled with history, culture, and connection to their ancestral roots.

✨ Highlights from Ghana

Assin Manso

Our first stop was Assin Manso, a historic site where enslaved Africans took their last bath before being forced to the coast and shipped across the Atlantic. Today, Assin Manso stands as a place of healing, remembrance, and reconnection for descendants like us.

Shopping for Kente Cloth

Each youth scholar was gifted a custom-made outfit from a Ghanaian tailor — a vibrant, personal piece of culture they will carry forever. Beyond memories, they brought home something tangible from the Motherland.

Kwame Nkrumah Museum & Mausoleum

At the Kwame Nkrumah Museum, our scholars learned about Ghana’s first president, a visionary leader who fought for Black liberation and African unity. His story deeply inspired our youth.

Echoing Hills Village

One of the most powerful moments was volunteering at Echoing Hills Village, a home for orphans and children with disabilities. Our scholars laughed, shared stories, and even painted a wall to leave a lasting mark of love.

Cape Coast Castle

The scholars visited Cape Coast Castle, one of the most significant sites tied to the transatlantic slave trade. Walking through the infamous Door of No Return — now rebranded as the Door of Return — was an emotional and transformative experience, symbolizing the power of reclaiming our history and reconnecting with home.
